In 1912 at the opening of the park, Councillor Leach stated that “open spaces and playgrounds for children ought to have the support of the people”.
He hoped that the park would, as time went on, prove a “boon and a blessing” and that the people would “regard it as their own and would treat it as such”.
Over the years since then Dunwood Park has been well used and well loved and enjoyed by the whole community.
Sadly, time has not been kind to the park and as we approach its centenary we can see that much of the park is in need of rejuvenation.
The park is a living and breathing part of our life and heritage. It is a unique asset for the people of this area and beyond.
It is a pathway to the moorlands: a place for rest, relaxation and leisure in the woodland, playground, bowls and tennis courts.
It shelters abundant wildlife including rabbit, squirrel, fox, owl, heron, mallard, brown trout and many species of birdlife.
Many people recall with delight, humour and nostalgia the walks in the woodland,
the tennis in the summer and some speak of those long summer evenings when friendships blossomed among the beech trees.
Local schools and toddler groups can often be seen searching for bears in the undergrowth!
Crown green bowling has been a feature of the park for many years and continues today with a number of teams playing in local leagues.
Younger children now enjoy the new playpark.
The joggers, strollers and dog owners meet with long distant walkers traveling on the footpaths of the Oldham, Rochdale and Shaw Ways.
Friends of Dunwood Park

Five years ago some of the community who were concerned about the declining state of the park got together to try to do something about it.
They formed the Friends of Dunwood Park, a community group which now has over one hundred and fifty members.
They sought and received the backing of the people who used the park and the Parish Council and the Area Committee of Oldham Council.
A committee was appointed and during their first year, 2004, they achieved some remarkable success.

The Friends of Dunwood Park launched the Dunwood Community Partnership in January 2009
with a Prospectus designed to inform the community of the proposed plans for the redevelopment of the park. Partners can include businesses, clubs, teams and even communities of
bloggers such as the Holligans, who support this bid from all corners of
the globe. |
